Kendal's Column: Twitter Changes and New Books On The Shelf (February 2014)

"Kendal...what happened to twitter?
@Team_Haymitch?
what is @KendalFace_?
Why is this happening?
What?
WhAt?"

Some of you may have noticed that on sunday night I think a twitter 'musical chairs' went down.
Basically all the tweets and followers that used to be under @Team_Haymitch are now under the name of @KendalFace_ and @Team_Haymitch has a completely clean slate.
I changed the username because I felt like it wasn't justified to have a Hunger Games related name when i tweet barely any Hunger Games related tweets however, I do LIKE being @Team_Haymitch so i have kept the account and WILL tweet about Hunger Games news and opinions.
I hope that clears that up for anyone who was wondering.

New Books On The Shelf

Eleanor & ParkEleanor and Park
Status: Read
Set over the course of one school year in 1986, ELEANOR AND PARK is the story of two star-crossed misfits – smart enough to know that first love almost never lasts, but brave and desperate enough to try. When Eleanor meets Park, you’ll remember your own first love – and just how hard it pulled you under
I was recommended this book by multiple people and ,embarrassingly, I have only just got to it (i'm sorry, please don't hate me). i'm going to do a review for this book next week so stick around!

172 Hours on the Moon172 Hours On The Moon
Status: To Read
It's been decades since anyone set foot on the moon. Now three ordinary teenagers, the winners of NASA's unprecedented, worldwide lottery, are about to become the first young people in space--and change their lives forever.
Mia, from Norway, hopes this will be her punk band's ticket to fame and fortune.
Midori believes it's her way out of her restrained life in Japan.
Antoine, from France, just wants to get as far away from his ex-girlfriend as possible.
It's the opportunity of a lifetime, but little do the teenagers know that something sinister is waiting for them on the desolate surface of the moon. And in the black vacuum of space... no one is coming to save them.
I can't express in words how excited i am to read this book because i'm a space nerd- stars and space and nebulae and planets *sighs* i love it no matter how much or little of it there is. (I feel like I should point out that this book is placed in the Horror genre and not sci-fi- i feel like this could be important to mention)

Soulmates
Status: To Read
SoulmatesEvery so often, two people are born who are the perfect matches for each other. Soulmates. But while the odds of this happening are about as likely as being struck by lightning, when these people do meet and fall in love…thunderstorms, lightning strikes and lashings of rain are only the beginning of their problems.
Enter Poppy, the 17-year-old cynic with a serious addiction to banana milk, and Noah, the heart-throb guitarist; residents of mediocre Middletown, sometime students, and…soulmates.
After a chance meeting at a local band night, Poppy and Noah find themselves swept up in a whirlwind romance unlike anything they’ve ever experienced before. But with a secret international agency preparing to separate them, a trail of destruction rumbling in their wake, (and a looming psychology coursework deadline), they are left with an impossible choice between the end of the world, or a life without love…
I bought this book on a whim as it was 99p in the kindle store although, to be honest, i'm not entirely sure if this is contemporary or dystopian or sci-fi or...? i don't know. I shall read it and report back soon

If fate sent you an email, would you answer?
When teenage movie star Graham Larkin accidentally sends small town girl Ellie O'Neill an email about his pet pig, the two seventeen-year-olds strike up a witty and unforgettable correspondence, discussing everything under the sun, except for their names or backgrounds.
Then Graham finds out that Ellie's Maine hometown is the perfect location for his latest film, and he decides to take their relationship from online to in-person. But can a star as famous as Graham really start a relationship with an ordinary girl like Ellie? And why does Ellie want to avoid the media's spotlight at all costs?
As predicted, this was a great summer read. It had all the ingredients for the perfect teen romance novel. I'd recommend it to anyone who wants a holiday read and also point then in the direction of other novels by Jennifer E Smith .

Happy Friday!

POETRY WEDNESDAY: More dangerous things [original]

Your eyes are the barrels of a gun
When you look at me my brain is blown to pieces
And my cheeks ooze red

Your hands hold the triggers
I want so much to grip them tightly and never let go
And not doing so leaves me vulnerable

Your lips are the bullets
I find the urge to bite them
And leave the gun empty

POETRY WEDNESDAY: The Tattoo [original]

I’ve never wanted a tattoo
I’ve just never been all that interested
I didn’t want the dangerous ink
Or the pain
Or the commitment
But you are the tattoo
And I have never been more interested
You are more dangerous than the ink
And more painful than the pen
For you, I am totally committed
And I hope you are permanent

SHORT STORY WEDNESDAY: Hot Chocolate [original]

We were curled up on the sofa by the roaring fireplace in your house and we clutched our mugs. The steam was practically rolling off it - like a witches' cauldron - and I filled the mugs up too high so there was thick chocolate dripping down the sides, teasing our senses. I had four extra large marshmallows in mine, which were melting to create a thick layer of marshmallow goo on the top, which is my favourite kind of goo. You had whipped cream swirled around like an ice cream cone, and chocolate sprinkles with one single mini marshmallow on top. That pretty much describes our personalities.

We drank whilst listening to the fire crackle and spit and we said nothing, communicating only through our eyes and the entwining of our feet through our fuzzy slipper socks. I dipped my nose in my chocolate by mistake and bobbed back up from the mug with a pink marshmallow blob, and you laughed and so did I and I used a napkin to wipe it off because I can't reach my nose with my tongue and you don't like marshmallow goo, which I completely understand and don't hold against you.

Once we'd finished our hot chocolates, we put our mugs on the coffee table, which I've renamed the hot chocolate table because we both hate coffee. You laid down beside me on the sofa and we watched the fire dim together, with sleepy eyes and warm stomachs and love in our hearts. I made you promise to watch to fire until it went out completely because I have an irrational fear of the fire rising up again and burning the house down, and you promised because you completely understand and don't hold it against me. My eyes closed whilst I was in your arms and everything was okay. I woke up half an hour later still in your arms and the fire was out, and you were still asleep, and I realised that the only thing we hold against each other is ourselves.

POETRY WEDNESDAY: Close [original]

When you came close to me today

my body breathed a sigh of relief

my shoulders no longer felt heavy
my heart no longer felt frozen
Because even though your nails are bitten to the core
and your breath is scented with your morning coffee
all I wanted was for you to come closer
and you did.

Kendal's Column: Vampire Academy- Richelle Mead

Rose Hathaway is 17 and on the run with her best friend but they've been found. Now they've been taken back to school but is there something more dangerous than high school drama around the corner?

Rating: Thursday
Vampire Academy (Vampire Academy, #1)St. Vladimir’s Academy isn’t just any boarding school—it’s a hidden place where vampires are educated in the ways of magic and half-human teens train to protect them. Rose Hathaway is a Dhampir, a bodyguard for her best friend Lissa, a Moroi Vampire Princess. They’ve been on the run, but now they’re being dragged back to St. Vladimir’s—the very place where they’re most in danger. . . .
Rose and Lissa become enmeshed in forbidden romance, the Academy’s ruthless social scene, and unspeakable nighttime rituals. But they must be careful lest the Strigoi—the world’s fiercest and most dangerous vampires—make Lissa one of them forever.

When I originally picked up this book I admit I was skeptical because vampire books can either be really good or...not. however, i was pleasantly surprised as the book had realistic characters(for, y'know, vampires).
I feel I should mention that the book does contain strong language from, i think literally, the first page and is centered around the lives of 17 year olds (if you get what i'm saying) so be aware if you're sensitive to that kind of thing.
However, I must say I liked the balance of serious plot points and teenage politics and Rose's no-nonsense attitude that allowed the novel to have the occasional lighthearted tone.
That said, the novel is very romance centred and i'm still on the fence about whether i liked that aspect of it as much as i liked the serious plot.
To rate this book against others in the same genre i'd most likely place it as Eclipse in the Twilight Saga because it has the plot and the 'omg gurl u did not just do that' factor.
Overall i'd say this book is a strong contender in the vampire fiction genre (as it should be, seen as though the movie is out on February 14th- YES, NEXT WEEK) and is great for anyone interested in a book with a balance of light and dark plot points.

Oh and look...here are the trailers!

From the look of the trailers they may have combined the plots from books further on in the series but i'm not entirely sure because, as we all know, films can vary from the original plotline of the book.

Happy Friday!

SHORT STORY WEDNESDAY: The truth about the night [original]

What is it about the night? It must be made of pure magic. The night gets to see the faces behind the masks. The night gets to see the poems and the words that could never have been conceived during the hours containing light.

The night, I often think, could be the work of faeries. Each night, every single faerie in the world join together in the skies, dancing to the merry tune that we mistake for silence. There are so many faeries that the light from the sun is blocked out, and all you can see glittering in the sky are their lanterns and their eyes. I think that would be a pretty cool thing to be true.

The night sees many darker things than itself. It sees the tears, and the pain, and sometimes the scars, and no matter how hard it tries to embrace those darker things and reassure them, the night will always seem like the darkest time.
